“When your corporate car has ears and a tail, you can pretty much get away with anything,” – Barry Murray, Truly Nolen director of marketing and public relations.
A very successful national franchise pest control company has taken it’s marketing plan online in a big way. This shows that there may be a future where marketing is completely different, but with Truly Nolen, marketing has always been Truly different. See what they’re up to.
Many of you are probably wondering, “Why is Sid spending so much time on this stuff?” Sometimes I wonder myself. There certainly isn’t any money in it at this point in the game. I’m not sure there will be. My motive for investing this time is that I see a huge sweeping transition in the way marketing is done coming. Although I feel so far behind and don’t see myself getting ahead of the curve on this, I want to get somewhere near it so I can help my clients understand the potential, their need to move on it, and identify resources to help them when it is time for them to go-social.

When we listened to the talk at the Fall Event about being remarkable (with the idea of moving the silo) one marketing idea I remembered reading about was a garden center that had a red Beetle with black vinyl dots that looked like a lady bug. It had the name of the GC on it, along with the web site address, and served as a moving billboard. I tried to talk Bob into it, with predictable results. But I like this exterminator business’s progressive, off-the-wall ideas. I don’t think you are talking about this area of marketing too much at all. Keep it coming!
Hi Lynn,
The “gardening bug” is at our place, Rockledge Gardens. We really feel we have gotten alot of mileage out if it (pardon the pun!) as far as advertising goes. It is the vehicle that I drive on a daily basis and when I am at the nursery it is parked in a very prominent spot. Even after 5 years, we still get honks and waves and people asking us advice at stop lights and in parking lots. It’s really lots of fun and we expensed it to advertising. Sure has served us better than billboards ever did. You can see a photo of it on our website at rockledgegardens.com.
Thanks, Theresa! I would have given you credit for the “bug” but I just couldn’t remember where I saw it. I thought, and still think, it is a wonderful idea, and it has to work better than most advertising. Keep up the good work!
